Ancillary Task 2: Magazine Advert - Planning

We put in the most planning work on the digipak artwork, as we always knew that this would formulate the core of our magazine advert and other promo material. Therefore, we didn't spend too much time on planning for the magazine advert, however, I did sketch this idea for the advert in the early stages before we even looked at the digipak in any great length and while the music video was in the early stages of the editing phase.

And above is a quick mock-up I constructed in Photoshop.

Early Idea for Magazine Advert

This is an idea I came up with for the magazine advert before we even started looking at the digipak cover artwork. It uses narrow, letterbox-style screengrabs of the music video assembled in vertical order, with a simple band logo and 'End Transmission' at the bottom, with the release date in smaller type just underneath it, with all of this centralised. The font for the track title and date are elegant and heavily stylised to almost look like old-fashioned handwriting, fitting with the conventions of the band - they commonly use fonts such as these and this fits with their Gothic style. It has an element of mystery - the photos don't directly display the faces of any of the band members, and it creates a sense of intrigue. It's unlikely that we will use this idea due to the different direction that the album cover planning has gone, but, like the early idea Mike had for the digipak, it can easily be used as a foundation for future ideas, and elements of this can be used for for the final magazine advert.
